Driving adaptation in Avignon
Avignon combines a historic centre enclosed by its ramparts with a wider area you cross by car, between the Rhône and the Durance. Two very different kinds of driving, often on the same trip.
What surprises new arrivals
The walled centre
Inside the ramparts, streets are narrow, often one-way, and access is partly restricted. Knowing where to park and which way to enter saves a lot of detours.
The bridges
The Rhône and the Durance frame the city: the bridges concentrate traffic, and rush hour is felt there first.
Motorway and ring road
The A7 serves Avignon from the east, and the A9 towards Languedoc and Spain starts at Orange, further north. The ring road and interchanges call for reading the signs early.
Busy seasons
In summer, especially during the festival, traffic and parking around the centre change markedly.
